"To 'look' is a very complex process, to 'see' is simple"
by Professor Stuart Hall
My work aims to interrogate and interact with the meaning of representation and the interpretations of what we see and think we see.
As a black female artist I use my experiences to evoke a connection between myself, the sitter and ultimately the viewer.
Truthfulness and emotional connection is a common denominator in my photography. This applies to the straight printing from black & white negative film as well as to the composition of the images along with the engagement with my subjects. By framing subjects in black or placing them in front of a brick wall, I isolate them from their natural surroundings in order to eliminate stereotypes and to evoke a connection between subject and viewer.
